Im reading the book "The absolutely true diary of a Part time indian" by Sherman Alexie. First of i would like to say that i heard that this book was interesting let me tell you what has happned till now. Well the story starts of by the narrator being the principal character of the book. He explains who is he by telling you how he had too much fluids on his brain and doctors had to remove some and that caused him to be different than other kids. He has big feet, big arms, a really big head, some weird looking glasses and some bad teeth, and steel his very short. He takes advantage that hes introudicing himself so he aswell shows us hes love for drawing by making one of himself, He tells how he loves drawing so much and how he thinks it helps people to communicate. He draws all the time and he draws everything. Drawing is a big part of his life since he wants to be recognized by his drawings. Junior is poor, his family is poor and he lives in a poor communit called Wellpinit. He believes that with hes drawings he will get his family out of there. Junior talks about how KFC chicken is so important to him because he dosent get to eat it all the time because he is poor. He and his family have a dog called Oscar that is Juniors best friend he got sick and the family was too poor to cure him so to end his misery Juniors dad shot him with a gun, that devastated the kid. After that Junior intreduces his other human best friend called Rowdy who is kind of a tough guy, he always gets in fights and he always has a black eye. They went to a fair that the community had and some kids were bullying Junior so Rowdy punched them, thats when Junior realized that Rowdy was like his protector. Rowdys parents are alwasy drunk just like Juniors but Rowdys parents tend to hit him a lot. Junior talks about his older sister and his love for basketball. He talks about how he loves geometry class. One day the teacher (Mr.P) was giving out some textbooks to work on when he saw one that had his mothers name on it. That made him really mad because he realized that hes class was using a textbook that was almost 30 years old and that hes school was extreamly poor so he went crazy and he throwed the text book to Mr. P which got him on big trouble. He was suspended and forgived by his teacher. Eventually Junior manages to get his parents to change him of school to a "rich kids school" which the parents are able to get him on. They told him that the transaction wasnt going to be easy becuase of the friends and everything. The next day he tells rowdy taht he is changing of school to Reardan and he gets really really mad and punches him. This was everything important that happened to Junior in the first 7 Chapters.
“It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you're poor
because you're stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you're stupid
and ugly because you're Indian. And because you're Indian you start believing
you're destined to be poor. It's an ugly circle and there's
nothing you can do about it."
In this quote we can see how Junior thinks too much and how he dosent believe in himself. He needs to be proud about his race and who he is becuase at the end theres nothing you can do about it. He needs to think different in order to do something about his poverty.
“Everybody on the rez calls me a retard about twice a day. They call me
retard when they are pantsing me or stuffing my head in the toilet or just
smacking me upside the head.”
I think he shouldnt listen to them because it dosent matter what people think about you. And if they physically abuse him then he should make something about it because its not ok.
As some final thoughts about Junior and his life as now i think that is pretty interesting and i just want to keep reading becuase i want to know what happens next in his life. I predict that he will do great at his new school and that he will do a lot of friends there. I also hope that someone finds how much talent Junior has with hes drawings. He is a good kid.
